Tip Sheets for Parents of Junior Infants
Starting Junior Infants is a very special milestone in your child’s life. The first weeks of school are focused on helping children settle in, feel secure and begin to enjoy school life.
🌟 Preparing for school
It can really help if your child can:
- Put on and take off their coat independently
- Use the toilet and wash hands without support
- Open and close their lunchbox and school bag
- Tidy up after themselves and take turns in play
- Separate happily from parents/carers for short periods
🧠 Helping your child settle
- Talk positively about school in the lead-up to starting
- Involve your child in preparing school items (bag, lunchbox, uniform)
- Establish a simple morning routine before school begins
- Keep goodbyes calm, confident and brief at the school gate
🍎 At school
Junior Infants learn through play, activity and structured routines. Children are supported to:
- Build friendships and social skills
- Develop independence and confidence
- Learn to listen, follow instructions and work with others
- Enjoy learning through hands-on activities
Every child settles in differently. Staff work closely with families to ensure a smooth and happy transition into school life.
