Starting Junior Infants is a very special milestone in your child’s life. The first weeks of school are focused on helping children settle in, feel secure and begin to enjoy school life.

It can really help if your child can:
Put on and take off their coat independently
Use the toilet and wash hands without support
Open and close their lunchbox and school bag
Tidy up after themselves and take turns in play
Separate happily from parents/carers for short periods

Talk positively about school in the lead-up to starting
Involve your child in preparing school items (bag, lunchbox, uniform)
Establish a simple morning routine before school begins
Keep goodbyes calm, confident and brief at the school gate
