Gardening
Our school garden is a special place where children learn, explore and connect with the natural world. Through planting, growing and caring for our garden, pupils develop an understanding of sustainability, biodiversity and healthy living.
Children across all class levels take part in seasonal gardening activities such as sowing seeds, planting vegetables, maintaining flower beds and observing wildlife. The garden provides a hands-on learning environment where pupils can develop responsibility, teamwork and a sense of pride in their work.
We are very proud of our success in the Cork Schools Garden Competition, where our hard work and creativity have been recognised. In 2024, we were delighted to be awarded School Garden of the Year in County Cork.
We are continually developing our outdoor space and are excited to expand our garden as a place for learning, relaxation and creativity for all members of our school community.
We are fortunate to have a large school site in which to enjoy the outdoors and learn about out natural world. We grow a selection of organic fruit and vegetables in our polytunnel each year. Pupils learn how to cultivate the soil and how to take care of the planted produce.
Pupils are very fortunate to have a playground area created from materials in the environment. This includes a balancing pole, jumping stumps and a hopping obstacle.
Parents, students and staff alike worked on the sensory garden which is complete with a solar water feature and many plants and flowers which appeal to our 5 senses. Pupils also love the willow dome area and friendship buddy bench.
We have an outdoor ‘Aistear’ play area/outdoor classroom . Seats were made from tree stumps, we recycled two large blackboards for writing and old pots and pans compliment our mud kitchens. We really got in the spirit of ‘reusing’ for this area.
A sincere thanks to an Teagasc, all parents, pupils and staff who contribute to our amazing garden. Ní neart go cur le chéile!
